American Icons: More Than a Photo Op

Mall and Monuments

Washington

The Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the National Mall: There are so many iconic spots in Washington that many groups visiting the city spend their time rushing from one monument to another in an attempt to see them all. Although it’s possible to visit most of the highlights on foot, a variety of tours showcase the sites in diverse ways.

“You can experience the National Mall in many ways,” said Morgan Maravich, tourism services manager for Destination DC. “There are bike tours, Segway tours and free walking tours. There are even a few boat companies that give tours. You can do a double-decker bus, a trolley or a duck tour.”

Some of the boat tours available take advantage of the Potomac River to give passengers a leisurely, traffic-free ride past some of the city’s most memorable landmarks. The tours begin in Georgetown and dock right behind the Lincoln Memorial so guests can step off and have a closer look at some of the monuments.

Maravich said one of the most interesting ways to take advantage of those tours is to do them by night.

“You see a different side of the monuments than if you see them during the day,” she said. “At the Korean War Memorial, you see different shadows portrayed in their [the soldiers’] faces. You get a different look and feel from each memorial that you don’t get in the daytime.”
