Busting Bus Safety Myths

SALEM, Ohio — The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is setting the record straight on some myths surrounding motorcoach safety.

Myth 1: Because buses are so large, passengers don’t need to think about safety.

It’s true that, overall, buses are one of the safest ways to travel. And being inside a very large vehicle can sometimes offer more protection. However, their very size creates some risks for buses.

With long stopping distances, large blind spots and limited maneuverability, a bus is nothing like a big car. It takes special training to operate a bus safely. That’s why bus drivers must have commercial driving licenses and passenger endorsements, meaning they are required to have additional qualifications to transport passengers.

Just as in air travel, it’s important for passengers to locate and learn to use emergency exits.

Myth 2: When it comes to safety, all bus companies are alike.

Most bus companies are committed to safety, but a few put profits above passenger safety. Some operators may skip required safety inspections or maintenance, neglect safety equipment or use unqualified drivers. Some may even run buses without the authority to operate. That’s why researching bus company safety is the most important step in planning a bus trip.

Myth 3: There’s nothing a group travel professional or trip planner can do about bus safety.

There are several steps that every group travel planner can easily take:

• Learn about bus safety and use the free SaferBus mobile app to research bus company safety. The app is available at www.fmcsa.dot.gov/lookbeforeyoubook.

• Never choose a bus company that is not authorized to operate.

• Talk to prospective bus operators about driver qualifications and their safety programs. Most companies are proud of their safety efforts and should be happy to discuss them.

• For longer trips, talk to the bus company about whether your group needs a second driver to avoid illegal and dangerous hours of service violations.

Myth 4: There’s nothing passengers can do about bus safety.

Bus travelers can make significant safety contributions by taking a few minutes to research bus safety before booking or chartering a bus. Get passenger safety information and the SaferBus app.

Always travel on a bus that is authorized to operate. Learn about onboard safety and safety equipment with the Learn Before You Board fact sheet.

Report any unsafe bus operations using the SaferBus app; just use the “Leave a Complaint” button. Passengers can also call the Department of Transportation toll-free line at 888-368-7328.
