Going On Faith Targets Megachurch Readership

One of the biggest trends in Protestant circles over the past two decades has been the emergence of megachurches, defined in general terms as congregations of 2,000 or more members. There are no fewer than 800 of these very large churches in America today.

“Megachurches have redefined worship opportunities for many Americans in the past 20 years,” said Mac Lacy, publisher of Going on Faith, the only magazine dedicated to the faith-based travel industry. “With video conferencing facilities, elaborate family programming, multiple services during the week and careful attention to changing worship needs among different demographics, these churches have captured a large share of church attendance today. Most of these big churches have dynamic travel programs as well.”

Going On Faith magazine has launched a yearlong effort to bring hundreds of these congregations into its readership. Since November of last year, the magazine’s circulation department has added more than 50 of America’s megachurches and will reach out to more than 500 more throughout the remainder of 2015.

“In looking at these congregations, we often find that they have travel programs for several age groups,” said Lacy. “Many also have music and choir groups that travel to perform as well. By year’s end, we anticipate adding hundreds of thousands of qualified church-related travelers to our sphere of influence for Going On Faith magazine.

“Statistically, we already know that an average church in our existing readership has 185 travelers and takes five to six overnight trips each year,” said Lacy. “We also know that roughly a third are traveling internationally and that half are doing mission trips. We look forward to seeing how much these megachurches add to our dynamic readership.”
