Located in Western Maryland, Hagerstown is located at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers, and just south of the Mason-Dixon Line. We are part of the Appalachian Highlands, where you can take in the beauty of cultivated valleys, and pastoral low rolling mountains.
Founded in 1776, we are home to five National Parks, and over 30 museums and monuments that span three centuries. Our historical story includes Fort Frederick, Antietam National Battlefield, Pry House Field Hospital, and the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal.
The historical legacy of Hagerstown and Washington County, MD includes an abundance of Civil War sites, cultural and historical museums, and monuments that span three centuries. Antietam National Battlefield is our headlining attraction, and we are also home to the Pry House Field Hospital, and South Mountain State Battlefield. Also, visit the Kennedy Farm, where John Brown planned his raid on Harper’s Ferry.
Hagerstown’s Arts & Entertainment District’s “Leady Lady” is the historic Maryland Theatre Performing Arts Complex. It is currently undergoing a multi-million-dollar expansion to be completed this year. The Theatre offers outstanding performances and events and is home to the Maryland Symphony Orchestras. Our Museum of Fine Arts, located in the award-winning City Park, boasts an outstanding collection with pieces by world renowned artists such as Picasso, Rodin, and Norman Rockwell and its at the head of our new Cultural Trail. The Cultural Trail connects the City Park with the A&E District.
Local river outfitters offer guided whitewater rafting, tubing, kayaking, canoeing, ziplining, climbing, cycling & hiking trips in the historic area of Antietam Creek, the Potomac and the Shenandoah Rivers. Their signature specialty paddling and hiking tours offer food, beverage, and educational packages on the river or trail.
The Appalachian Trail and the C&O Canal run along the southern border of our county and can provide a great way for students to learn about the outdoors, conservation, biology and get a good work out at the same time!
