Plan ahead for the Lady and Sons

One of the most famous Savannah stories of recent times is the life of Paula Deen, a local woman who rose from financial despair to international fame based on her shining personality and the strength of her traditional cooking.

Fans of culinary television know Deen as the reigning queen of Southern cuisine from her several shows on the Food Network. But Deen’s success began in Savannah, where she started a small sandwich delivery company and later a restaurant to financially support herself and her two sons. Her restaurant, the Lady and Sons, won acclaim throughout Savannah for its delicious, traditional Southern food. As the restaurant grew in popularity, Deen began making television appearances and eventually grew to become an international culinary superstar.

The Lady and Sons continues to thrive today and is one of the hottest spots for dining in Savannah. The restaurant doesn’t take reservations for small parties, and many individuals wait in line for three hours or more for a chance to eat there. But the restaurant makes special accommodations for groups, who can reserve a designated time to eat.

If you take your group, the best bet is the extensive buffet, which features favorite Southern dishes such as fried chicken, sweet potatoes, and macaroni and cheese. Each guest also gets a homemade cheese biscuit and a hoecake.
