At First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park near Ulm, Montana, visitors learn about the fascinating buffalo-hunting techniques used by native tribes who lived in the area for thousands of years.
Buffalo were perhaps the most important game for the Native Americans of the West, and the state park preserves a site where hunters would stampede herds of buffalo over the side of a cliff to quickly harvest them. Groups can trace the buffalo-run tracks along the top of the milelong sandstone cliff or explore the beauty of the Rocky Mountains on three miles of hiking trails. At the bottom of the cliff are up to 18 feet of compacted buffalo remains, evidence of the importance of that animal in centuries of Native American life.
The park has a 6,000-square-foot visitors center with exhibits on buffalo culture, a storytelling circle, a gallery and a bookstore. Activities are also available in an outdoor amphitheater.
