Leisure travelers predicted to increase

ORLANDO – More Americans are scheduling in a trip this summer than pre-recession times. According to a recent survey of 2,300 U.S. adults by TravelHorizons, 70 percent of Americans plan to take at least one leisure trip between July and October 2013.

This is a new high since TravelHorizons began its quarterly survey in March 2007 for marketing services firm MMGY Global. Scheduled vacations reached a high of 65 percent that quarter.

Although leisure travel intentions have increased, Americans’ perceived “safety of travel” has dropped. The Travel Sentiment Score has also been tracked every calendar quarter since March 2007. A score above 100 means the current perception of travel safety is more positive than negative.

The score dropped from 99.2 in February 2013 to 91.8 this April. It should be noted that the April 2013 survey was fielded two days following the Boston Marathon bombings, which may have impacted the score.
