Macon blooms in Georgia’s heartland

Georgia Sports Hall of Fame

Georgia Sports Hall of Fame
Another local museum calls attention to the achievements of Georgians in the athletic arena. The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame honors more than 300 of the state’s most accomplished athletes.
“This is the largest state sports hall in the country,” Bradley said. “It’s basically a walk down memory lane of all the great Georgia sports favorites.”

The 43,000-square-foot museum was built to resemble an early-20th-century ballpark and contains more than 3,000 sports artifacts. Many are uniforms, equipment and other memorabilia donated by the athletes inducted into the hall of fame every February. Guests will see tributes to football greats such as Shannon Sharpe and Herschel Walker, as well as to Georgia golfers, baseball players, racecar drivers and athletes who excelled in less popular sports.

In addition to the personal displays, the hall of fame offers a number of opportunities for hands-on fun.

“The museum is very interactive,” Bradley said. “You can try a NASCAR simulation or take a shot on a basketball court.”
