Washington D.C. Unplugged

Little Ethiopia Food Tour, D.C. Metro Food Tours

The aroma of strong coffee and thick spices lets groups know they have entered the D.C. area known as Little Ethiopia. About 25 shops and restaurants down historic U Street and Ninth Street showcase the culture of Ethiopian immigrants to the area, the world’s largest such community outside of Ethiopia.

Groups can sample these bold flavors while learning about the history of the area and its culture on D.C. Metro Food Tours’ Little Ethiopia Food Tour. Designed for the adventurous eater, the three-hour tour takes guests from one authentic restaurant to the next, sampling African dishes.

“Little Ethiopia is a tour I’m excited about,” said Gibbs. “It is in an area that has a number of layers of history. It’s a place where Ethiopian immigrants moved in and opened shops and businesses.”

The area not only showcases the Ethiopian ethnic community but also features a fascinating past. The 19th-century neighborhood houses line the streets once known as Black Broadway. Duke Ellington grew up in this area, famous for its African-American influence.

Groups can dine while touring on this ethnic tour or one of D.C. Metro Food Tours’ other 13 walking culinary tours.

National Mall Segway Tour, City Segway Tours

Just by leaning forward, you can set a Segway in motion. The two-wheel motorized scooter responds to your movements easily, so first-time riders can pick up how to ride around D.C. during a 30-minute orientation.

“I thought it was thrilling,” said Gibbs. “I couldn’t believe they have such a quick lesson, but that is all you really need because it is so responsive. You practice, and you just whip around the National Mall.”

City Segway Tours’ National Mall Segway Tour allows visitors to effortlessly glide around the capital’s top attractions. Guides will relate little-known facts and stories about each of the stops along the route, so both new and repeat guests will learn more information during the tour.

Segways on this tour roll past the White House, the Lincoln Memorial, the Capitol Building, the Washington Monument and Pennsylvania Avenue. Groups will also discover the Smithsonian Castle, the first endowment of the Smithsonian Institution.

At another stop, participants can see some of the world’s finest art from the last three centuries at the National Gallery of Art. The tour also passes by the Navy Memorial, the WWII Memorial and the National Mall.
