Pilsen Mexican Heritage

Boldly colored murals can be found nearly everywhere in Pilsen: on the fronts of homes, along railway overpasses and around train platforms. These uplifting murals welcome visitors to the neighborhood that has blossomed with life from a tight-knit community of Mexican Americans.

“Pilsen is a very colorful neighborhood,” said Lesniewicz. “It is still a neighborhood but is becoming more and more of a destination.”

The artistic mien of Pilsen continues with galleries, vintage shops, cafes and the National Museum of Mexican Art. The art museum highlights prominent works by Mexican artists and artifacts from Mexican history.

At the “Mexicanidad: Our Past Is Present” exhibit, guests walk through the history of Mexico from ancient time to the present day.

Docents bring the works of art to life with engaging 45-minute tours of the permanent and rotating exhibits. Since the museum lies in the heart of Pilsen, groups can leave the museum to wander into shops and restaurants serving authentic Mexican cuisine.
