Reasons to Return to Myrtle Beach

Lively Entertainment

Inspired by the country band Alabama, the Alabama Theatre was founded in 1993 as part of an effort to create a show that celebrated all musical genres, merging country, pop, gospel, comedy and more. Recently voted the area’s
No. 1 Live Entertainment Theater by Myrtle Beach visitors, the theater’s signature production “One: The Show” continues to grow and feature new singers, costumes and songs each year. The 2016 Guest Concert Series includes LeAnn Rimes, Josh Turner, Loretta Lynn and other singing legends.

For over 27 years, the Calvin Gilmore Theater has been a staple of Myrtle Beach entertainment, known for producing the original variety-music show “The Carolina Opry.” This performance shows off some of the strongest musical talents in town as it combines comedy, song and dance.

The theater also presents “Thunder and Light,” a vibrant laser-light show featuring illusionists the Wagsters, as well as the hip-hop clogging group All That! from NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.” Another popular show is “Time Warp,” which pays tribute to the greatest hits from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s.

Located in the central hub of Broadway at the Beach, the Palace Theatre entertains guests young and old with magic, comedy and music. “Hot Jersey Nights,” which honors the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons as well as the Beach Boys, has met with resounding success around the world and returns to Myrtle Beach each year by popular demand.

Meanwhile, thrill-seekers might gravitate toward “Cirque Extreme,” an award-winning acrobatic show with brand-new elements this year.

Food and Drink

As a major vacation destination, Myrtle Beach has no shortage of places to eat and drink. Make sure these local food and drink stops are on your Myrtle Beach itinerary.

Croissants — If you are on the hunt for a breakfast and lunch venue, look no further than Croissants Bistro and Bakery. The slogan “Bonjour, y’all!” invites patrons to experience Heidi Vukov’s high-demand fusion cooking, a combination of European cuisine and Southern home-cooking that she has successfully developed over the past 20 years.

Whether you choose the shrimp and grits with fried green tomatoes and pimento cheese, or the bananas Foster French toast, it is impossible to make a wrong decision. Finally, top off your meal with an affogato, a coffee-based dessert made of vanilla gelato dowsed in a shot of espresso.

Original Benjamin’s Calabash Seafood Buffet — How many restaurants can claim to employ a full-time model-ship designer? Original Benjamin’s Calabash Seafood Buffet thrives as the largest restaurant in Myrtle Beach, with a seating capacity of 1,000, 11 dining rooms, a 170-item buffet — and an in-house ship designer. While waiting for a table, patrons can admire the immense collection of nautical antiques on the walls or one of the many model ships on display.

Built by Jimmy Frost, the restaurant’s own master shipwright, some of these intricate models are more than 30 feet long and took up to two years to complete.

Duplin Winery — Stop by Duplin Winery, the largest muscadine winery in the world, for a “sweet taste of the South.” Originally located in Rose Hill, North Carolina, Duplin opened its second location in Myrtle Beach last year, and already, the distinct flavors of nature’s most healthful grape are drawing large crowds.

During the tour, guests learn about the 40-year history of this family-owned business and watch wine being bottled by hand. Group wine-tastings are also available; they feature 10 popular wines, along with gourmet cheese, crackers and a complimentary wine glass.
