Savannah: Live oaks for long walks

Savannah Theatre
A great day of Savannah stories ends at the Savannah Theatre, an entertainment enterprise that has an entertaining story of its own.

The theater’s owners and principal players met after college performing at a small theater in Michigan, where they dreamed up the concept that would become the Savannah Theatre.

“We decided that we could do entertainment better than the people we were working for, so we decided to go looking for a city to do it in,” said co-owner and performer Michael Zaller. “We found this theater in Savannah that was built in 1818 — it’s arguably the oldest continuously operating theater site in the country.”

Zaller and his partners renovated the theater’s interior themselves, repainting the walls and installing new seats, and then began creating shows to perform there.

“The idea is that it’s a Branson-style revue show,” he said. “We have a five-piece live band. Our goal is to do family entertainment.”

The band backs up an ensemble of up to 10 cast members who sing and dance their way through two hours of popular music. The company has a number of productions that they rotate throughout the year such as “Jukebox Journey,” “Savannah Live!” and “The Beat Goes On.” They also produce an annual holiday show and a Broadway show every summer.
