We asked our staff, “How do you pass the time on long trips?” Find out our preferred ways to dilly-dally in this month’s Staff Sound-Off.
We played all kinds of games based on sights outside the window of the car. We made them up as we went.

I like reading books or listening to audiobooks to pass the time on long trips.
— Rachel Crick, Associate Editor & Project Manager
I love road trips! I pass the time by having deep and meaningful conversations, watching the scenery go by, listening to audiobooks, jamming to good music, taking the occasional nap or stopping off and getting a latte at a coffee shop.
— Donia Simmons, Creative Director
I love driving, so while my husband naps in the car I listen to an audiobook. Recently, I’ve been hooked on memoirs. They tend to be the perfect length, too.
— Ashley Ricks, Print & Digital Publishing Manager
I used to be all about music on road trips, but when podcasts hit the scene, they changed my world. If I’m driving alone, I usually have about a dozen podcasts queued up to keep me company. If I’m with the family, we’re probably listening to an audiobook.
— Brian Jewell, VP & Executive Editor
A podcast in one ear, a travel magazine in hand, planning out my next adventure on a piece of paper. But to be totally honest, napping is a sacred ritual. There’s a unique kind of magic in drifting off somewhere between mile markers or mid-air, only to wake up slightly confused and somehow halfway closer to your destination. I consider it the traveler’s version of time travel.
