Add Kentucky Derby Museum to your Holiday Itinerary!

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean that your group can’t get in on the Derby action! Kentucky Derby Museum offers some of the most unique and interactive experiences available to groups, and all with a Derby flair. The fact that it’s located minutes off of I-65 makes it an easy choice to work into your itinerary if your next stop is Cincinnati, Nashville, Indianapolis or Chicago.

Interactive Experiences

Reindeer Games is a mock-racing event that allows guests to share in the fun and excitement of wagering a real horse race. Each participant turns into a “high roller” once they learn how to handicap a race by the Museum’s expert. They’re then given $5,000 worth of “horsey bucks” that they can use to lay down a bet at the window. Through holiday magic, racehorses are transformed into racing reindeer, and each guest receives their own reindeer antlers to wear for good luck.

The Museum’s hat-making activity is our most popular experience. We call it “Hatitude” because guests get to create their very own Derby hat that reflects their unique style. Women and men can choose their hat base, try it on to make sure it fits, and then go from there to add feathers, ribbons and other bedazzling embellishments.

Guests can take home a Lucky Shoe (Horseshoe, that is!). This fun DIY craft is easy and fun! The Museum’s horseshoes have been worn by a Thoroughbred that has worked out at Churchill Downs Racetrack, and still contain some of the actual dirt from the track.

Cap the day with our exclusive Mint Julep University! Participants will learn how to make a Mint Julep the authentic way, leaving them confident enough to make a batch at an at-home Derby party. Class begins with a primer on how the Mint Julep got to be the signature drink of the Kentucky Derby. Then they’ll crush the ice, make simple syrup, spank the mint (yep, it’s a thing!), muddle everything together, and pour the bourbon over ice. And then sit back and enjoy!
