SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — When it opens in May on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, the five-acre Butterfly Wonderland will be one of the largest butterfly pavilions in America.
It will feature a 10,000-square-foot glass atrium with a tropical rainforest environment with waterfalls, koi fish ponds and flowering plants and trees; educational laboratories; interactive exhibits; a 3-D movie theater; a gift shop; and a cafe-style dining area.
Butterflies in the pavilion will be from Costa Rica, Brazil, the Philippines and Africa, along with domestic butterflies from Florida.
Butterfly Wonderland is the first phase of a planned Odysea in the Desert, a 35-acre, $170 million entertainment complex that will eventually include the largest aquarium in the Southwest, an IMAX theater and a Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum.
