John Wayne Museum Opens Next to His Iowa Birthplace
WINTERSET, Iowa — The John Wayne Birthplace Museum, the world’s only museum dedicated to legendary actor John Wayne, is set to open with a variety of events the weekend of May 22-24 that will include a rodeo and performance by country music star Marty Stuart.
Located next to the John Wayne Birthplace Home, the new 6,100-square-foot museum includes interactive displays, a large collection of artifacts and memorabilia, a theater modeled after the local Winterset movie theater, a gift shop and room for temporary exhibits.
The gallery is divided in sections to reflect different parts of Wayne’s life and career. “American” deals with his support of the United States and his various political activities; “Family Man” embraces aspects of Wayne the husband and father and includes one of his last cars; while a large space, “Actor,” is devoted to his career in films.
Artifacts and memorabilia from his life and career include props, costumes, sculptures, artwork, photographs, correspondence, personal items and audio and video.
