PHILADELPHIA — The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program has announced Philly Painting, a project with world-renowned Dutch artists Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn, also known as Haas and Hahn.
Haas and Hahn will transform streetscapes with large-scale mural projects that will swathe entire blocks in color. The works of art will be installed between the 2500 and 2800 blocks of Germantown Avenue in North Philadelphia with assistance from a painting team hired from the surrounding neighborhood.
Once the work around Germantown and Lehigh avenues is completed, the artists will create another large-scale mural project in Center City.
Local tour guides will lead groups through the corridor, bringing attention both to the project and to local businesses. Germantown Avenue merchants have printed the painting team’s uniform and merchandising products.
Haas and Hahn began their yearlong residency in Philadelphia in September 2011. The artists began painting along Germantown Avenue in late April, joined by their team of local residents, who will be artists’ assistants for the duration of the project. Philly Painting will be dedicated in October during Mural Arts Month.
The Mural Arts Program is the nation’s largest mural program. Since 1984, the Mural Arts Program has created more than 3,500 murals and works of public art.
