ST. LOUIS — The new East Building will add 30 percent more space to the St. Louis Art Museum when its opens in late June.

Designed by British architect Sir David Chipperfield to both stand on its own and complement the original 1904 Main Building, the East Building will feature 21 new galleries, an underground parking facility, a 60-seat cafe and a 100-seat restaurant.

The addition features an exterior finished in dark polished concrete and Missouri River aggregate, skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows to enhance the light.

The $162 million project also includes renovation of more than 13,000 square feet in the original building, as well as a Grand Stair that transitions between the expansion and the current museum.
A new outdoor sculpture by British sculptor Andy Goldsworthy features 24 10-foot-high arches.
