Staff Sound-Off: Childhood Career

We asked our staff, “What profession did you want to have when you were a kid?” Find out what we wanted to be when we grew up in this month’s Staff Sound-Off.

I wanted to play football in the NFL.  Hey, I may have been small, but I was slow!

— Mac Lacy, Publisher

I wanted to be an FBI agent.

— Telisa Rech, Advertising Sales Manager

Professional dancer

— Sarah Sechrist, Controller

I have always loved animals, so I really wanted to be a veterinarian until I realized how many science classes that would require. I’m definitely better at English and history than science.

— Rachel Crick, Associate Editor & Project Manager

I wanted to be an architect. I would beg my mother to buy me Architectural Digest at the grocery store check-out. Occasionally she would buy one for me, but since it was around $4/issue in the ‘80s the answer was usually no. Instead, she would take me to the library so I could come home with a pile of magazines they were getting ready to discard. I would save all my favorite pictures, build Lego models of houses and lay in bed at night dreaming up spectacular homes. There was just one problem — math was my least favorite subject.

— Donia Simmons, Creative Director

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a doctor…. Then I realized I couldn’t do that much school.

— Kyle Anderson, VP, Sales & Marketing

I always wanted to be a teacher and even went to college for it. But then I lucked into a good job at a magazine after I graduated and I’ve never left! I still love teaching though, so I find ways to teach classes at church, coach speaking and debate, and tutor students through local nonprofits.

— Ashley Ricks, Print & Digital Publishing Manager

I wanted to be an attorney because I thought I was really good at arguing. When I got to college and met the other pre-law students, though, I decided those weren’t the kind of people I wanted to spend my life working with.

— Brian Jewell, VP & Executive Editor
