Staff Sound-Off: Childhood Memory

We asked our staff, “What’s your best childhood travel memory?” Find out what some of our core travel memories are in this month’s Staff Sound-Off.

On drives to Crescent Beach in South Carolina each summer we’d crane our necks to be the first to see the ocean on the horizon.

— Mac Lacy, Publisher

Our yearly family trips to Nags Head, North Carolina

— Telisa Rech, Advertising Sales Manager

Going to the beach every year

— Sarah Sechrist, Controller

I went to Charleston, South Carolina, with my mom and stepfather, and while we were there we took a ferry to Bulls Island and got to explore for a little while. We got to see wild alligators and hunt for shells on a nearly empty beach, which was incredible.

— Rachel Crick, Associate Editor & Project Manager

We always took family vacations in the nine-passenger station wagon which had a backwards-facing bench seat. Since I was the oldest, I would always call dibs on it. I spent hours of my life watching the beauty of the United States pass by that station wagon’s picture window. I saw Yellowstone, Mesa Verde, the Tetons, the Grand Canyon, San Diego, Los Angeles and Washington D.C. We visited Utah, Nevada, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, South Dakota, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and all the places along the way from that back window.

— Donia Simmons, Creative Director

I swam with dolphins in Cozumel, Mexico, on a cruise once. That was fun!

— Kyle Anderson, VP, Sales & Marketing

Growing up we always lived away from one side of my family or the other, so vacations were spent going to Massachusetts or eastern Kentucky. I always looked forward to Christmas with my grandparents. My grandma would transform their home into something magical, and we would cook and bake nonstop for our family’s Christmas Eve party, Christmas dinner and New Year’s Eve.

— Ashley Ricks, Print & Digital Publishing Manager

When I was about eight years old, my family took a short trip from our home in Lexington, Kentucky, to visit Mammoth Cave. It wasn’t a fancy trip by any means, but I loved exploring the cave and taking advantage of nearby amusement attractions like go-karts and mini golf.
